There are times when the friends and relatives of people who are abusing drugs need to show initiative and be the source of intervention for the person in crisis. It is often difficult to help an addict recover, regardless of their type of drug addiction, because the typical addict often does not want to be helped or is not yet ready to accept help. These type of addicts usually think that the real problem is with the person who is trying tell them they need help, and become angry and defensive when assistance is offered.

Knowing how the mind of an addict works can help you recognize when their defensive shields start to come down, and show you when they are finally receptive to getting help for their drug addiction. This is the moment when an intervention will be most effective.

The first step of a successful intervention is to get the help of someone who is well trained and equipped for the job. Having an impartial professional present emphasizes the gravity of the situation. A trained interventionist has the required level of practical and technical knowledge to keep the intervention focused.

A trained addiction specialist will discuss the situation with each individual who will be involved in the intervention prior to it taking place, in order to formulate a plan likely to yield the greatest level of success. While the approach may vary depending on the severity of the condition, the ultimate goal is always to get the addicted person to accept help.

It is important to understand that just as there is no single style of intervention that fits every situation, just as there is no one ‘cure-all’ treatment for all addicts. Different people and different addictions require different approaches and strategies.

There are different types of rehabilitation centers that offer varying levels of help depending on the nature of the drug addiction and the physical, psychological and emotional state of the abuser. It is imperative that you match the addict with the proper care program to ensure they have the best chance to successfully recover.

Keep in mind that even though you personally may feel treatment should be handled one way, a trained professional may disagree and recommend other options. Should this scenario arise, do not disregard their input. Discuss the options and realize that they have clinical experience and training in dealing with various stages of addiction, which is a great tool in understanding the best way to move forward.

Addicts often do not see their behavior as problematic which is why interventions prior to entering treatment can be helpful. Showing the addict that their actions not only have consequences for them but for those around them can be an effective impetus, helping them to finally realize that they need help. Without a timely intervention, the consequences an addict may face include legal problems, familial discord or alienation and even an untimely death.
